Bio

Lena Tam was elected to the Alameda County Board of Supervisors in November 2022, representing the Third Supervisorial District. Her district includes the cities of Alameda and San Leandro, parts of Oakland—such as Chinatown, Jack London Square, Cleveland Heights, Little Saigon/Clinton, Highland Terrace, San Antonio, Fruitvale, and Melrose—as well as the unincorporated communities of San Lorenzo and Hayward Acres.

With over 35 years of civic engagement, Supervisor Tam brings extensive leadership experience to the Board. She previously served as the first President of the City of Alameda Healthcare District Board, Vice Mayor and Council Member on the Alameda City Council, President of the Alameda County Planning Commission, and Chair of the League of Women Voters Alameda County.

As Vice Mayor, Supervisor Tam championed transparency and accountability, leading the passage of Alameda’s Sunshine Ordinance. She continues to prioritize these values as a County Supervisor while working to transform the County’s mental health services. Her focus is on ensuring equitable access to culturally and linguistically appropriate care, particularly for underserved communities. Additionally, she is committed to strengthening healthcare, employment opportunities, public safety, and the well-being of women, children, and families.

Beyond her role on the Board, Supervisor Tam serves on multiple governing bodies, including:

The daughter of first-generation Chinese immigrants, Supervisor Tam is also a dedicated caregiver to her over 90-year-old mother. She visits regularly and plays the piano for residents at her mother’s senior facility.

Supervisor Tam earned a Master of Public Administration from the University of San Francisco and a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Engineering from the University of California, Berkeley. Before her election, she retired from a distinguished 30-year career as the Water Resources Planning Manager at East Bay Municipal Utility District (EBMUD), which serves 1.4 million people. At EBMUD, she played a pivotal role in advancing the East Bay’s climate resilience, water conservation, recycling, and emergency action plans.
