Traffic Congestion — The Price of Transit-Oriented Growth

activemilpitas
Milpitas has added roughly 7,000 new housing units near its BART station over the past decade — and traffic has paid the price. Traffic congestion in the Milpitas Metro Area is already severe, particularly on Montague Expressway between I-680 and I-880, and is expected to worsen as the transit hub serves a projected 25,000 daily riders and thousands more new residents arrive under the Metro Specific Plan. Ironically, the density intended to reduce car dependence has created new congestion precisely because pedestrian and bicycle infrastructure has lagged behind housing construction. The city is now updating its Bicycle, Pedestrian, and Trails Master Plan, seeking public input on proposed improvements to make it safer and more convenient to walk, bike, and roll throughout Milpitas.
