US 101 Congestion — Growth Without Transportation Solutions
active• morganhill
US 101 through Morgan Hill is one of the most congested stretches of freeway in Santa Clara County — and rapid housing growth is making it worse. The section of US 101 from Dunne Avenue to the south end of Gilroy has been stop-and-go seven days a week for a decade, and every new residential project adds vehicle trips to a corridor with few viable alternatives. Caltrain serves Morgan Hill but with limited frequency, and the city's suburban land use pattern means most residents remain car-dependent for daily errands. The city's Comprehensive Safety Action Plan identifies priority corridors including Butterfield Boulevard and Monterey Road for systemic safety improvements, but freeway congestion is ultimately a regional challenge beyond any single city's control. With thousands of new housing units in various stages of approval, the gap between residential growth and transportation infrastructure is widening.
