LED Reader Boards — Balancing Communication & Community Character

activecolma
Colma is in an active civic debate over one of the most visible infrastructure decisions a small town can make: whether to install large LED reader boards at public facilities. Following a series of City Council study sessions, Town staff erected "story poles" — orange mesh frames — at both the Colma Police Department and the Colma Community Center to simulate the proposed LED reader boards, giving the Council, staff, and public a chance to evaluate the structures' size, orientation, and visual impact before committing to permanent installation. The boards are intended to improve public communications — broadcasting event notices, emergency alerts, and town announcements — but in a town whose civic character is defined by its quiet, cemetery-bordered streets and historic Town Hall, the aesthetic stakes are real. The City Council's study session to discuss the story poles was scheduled for April 8, 2026, with the Town explicitly welcoming public feedback on the proposal.
