Aging Adults & Age-Friendly Community Planning

activelosaltos
Los Altos has taken a notably proactive approach to serving its growing population of older adults. The city received the Age-Friendly designation from AARP and the World Health Organization in May 2024, and in December 2024 received approval of its Age-Friendly Action Plan — one of the few cities in Silicon Valley to achieve this designation. In 2026, the city launched a new online Aging Adults hub covering transportation, housing, emergency preparedness, and other resources for older residents. The challenge ahead is translating these commitments into physical and policy reality: affordable options for seniors wishing to downsize in Los Altos are extremely limited, transit access is sparse, and the General Plan update must actively incorporate age-friendly infrastructure if the city's commitments are to be meaningful.
