The New Community Pool — From Construction to Sustainable Operations
active• piedmont
Piedmont just completed one of the two largest capital projects in its history — and now faces the harder challenge of making it financially sustainable. The FY 2026–27 budget reflects a transition from major project delivery to long-term stewardship — with the city having completed an unprecedented number of capital improvements including the all-electric new Community Pool and the new 9-1-1 Dispatch Center. The Piedmont Community Pool is now open for lap and open swim seven days a week, with summer hours beginning June 8 — a tangible community benefit after years of planning, bonding, and construction. The pool's operating costs — staffing, chemicals, energy, maintenance — must now be absorbed into the city's annual budget, and the Pool Advisory Committee is actively engaged in developing a sustainable service model. The all-electric design, while environmentally sound, also creates ongoing energy cost exposure that must be managed through utility rate negotiations and efficiency measures.
