Bio

Harpreet S. Sandhu was appointed to the AC Transit Board of Directors on October 29, 2025, to represent Ward 1

Director Sandhu is a longtime East Bay resident, having lived in the area for more than 55 years. He comes from humble beginnings as the son of immigrant parents and grew up relying on AC Transit — whether for his mother’s late-night commute to San Francisco or his own rides to school and college — experiences that shaped his deep commitment to affordable, reliable public transportation.

Professionally, Sandhu brings a strong background in transportation and infrastructure policy. He currently serves as Senior District Representative for U.S. Rep. John Garamendi, where he works closely with federal, state, and local agencies, nonprofits, and community leaders to address transit funding, equity, and access issues.

Beyond his professional role, Sandhu has been deeply engaged in community service and advocacy for decades. He has supported organizations such as Lao Family Community Development, served on the California Developmental Disabilities Board for more than ten years, and championed immigrant communities, particularly after 9/11, when he helped protect Sikh taxi drivers from hate crimes. He has also worked on educational equity, serving as Chair of the West Contra Costa Unified School District’s Multilingual Advisory Committee.

Sandhu has strong roots in civic life. He has held leadership roles in the Sikh community, including serving as president of the Sikh Center of the San Francisco Bay Area. Earlier in his career, he worked for the U.S. Postal Service and was recognized for his community work.

In accepting his appointment, Director Sandhu expressed his determination to continue the legacy of his predecessor, the late H. E. Christian Peeples, as a staunch advocate for Ward 1’s diverse and underserved communities.

Representing: Ward 1 including Albany, El Cerrito, El Sobrante, Richmond, San Pablo, the unincorporated areas East Richmond Heights, Kensington, North Richmond and Rollingwood.
