AC Transit's "Doomsday Scenario" — Buses as Alameda's Lifeline

activealameda
For an island city whose tubes and bridges create bottlenecks even in normal times, public transit is not a convenience — it is a lifeline. And AC Transit is facing the most serious financial crisis in its history. AC Transit recently unveiled what it called a "Doomsday Scenario" for East Bay bus service — dramatic service cuts that would affect the dozens of lines serving Alameda residents who depend on AC Transit to reach BART, Oakland, and the broader Bay Area, particularly the many Alamedans who do not own cars or cannot drive. State Senator Jesse Arreguín highlighted the recent approval of a $750 million loan to Bay Area transit agencies as a temporary measure to prevent service cuts until a regional funding measure can be placed on the November 2026 ballot for voter approval — warning that "if we don't do something, BART will have to significantly reduce service." For Alameda, reduced AC Transit service would directly worsen traffic through the Webster and Posey Tubes — the city's only land connections — by pushing more riders into cars.
