The $800 Million Infrastructure Backlog — And the Revenue Measure Coming in November
active• alameda
Alameda's infrastructure is in crisis — and the city's leadership is finally putting the question to voters. The City of Alameda faces an $800 million backlog in deferred maintenance and climate-driven infrastructure needs — a staggering sum for a city of 80,000. A four-part City Council infrastructure workshop series covering libraries and parks, civic and fire facilities, streets and traffic safety, and shoreline flood protection has built the case for action. Upcoming community outreach in 2026 will help determine whether to pursue a revenue measure, such as an infrastructure bond, to fund some of the pressing needs identified. The city has simultaneously been raising recreation and parks fees by 3-5% to help cover rising costs. The Webster Tube — one of Alameda's two underwater vehicle connections to Oakland — entered construction in March 2026, adding daily disruption on top of the deferred maintenance backlog.
