The General Plan Update — A Once-in-a-Generation Community Vision

activelosaltos
Los Altos launched a comprehensive General Plan update in January 2026 — the first since the plan's adoption in 2002 — to address emerging issues, new state laws, and community priorities over the next 20 years. The update aims to preserve Los Altos's distinctive sense of place, reinforce the role of Downtown Los Altos, facilitate infill development in strategic locations, revitalize older commercial centers, promote environmental sustainability, and advance citywide goals for multimodal mobility, roadway safety, business vitality, and housing availability. This is one of the most consequential civic processes Los Altos will undertake in decades — and decisions made in this update will determine where housing gets built, how commercial areas evolve, what happens to the downtown, and how the city responds to climate and safety risks.
