Water Infrastructure — A Seismic Resilience Investment
active• hillsborough
Hillsborough is making a significant long-term investment in water supply resilience — one of the most consequential infrastructure projects in the town's history. The town is installing a seismically-resilient water pipeline from the SFPUC's Helen Turnout in Millbrae to the town's Darrell Tanks — a new connection providing an additional water supply route from SFPUC's higher-pressure system in the event that normal delivery from the lower-pressure zones is disrupted, with an approximate flow target of 6 million gallons per day. The purpose is dual: ensuring water delivery continuity after an earthquake, and — critically — providing a reliable water source within and adjacent to the Wildland Urban Interface to increase fire suppression resources and protect critical water storage and distribution infrastructure for residents of Hillsborough, Millbrae, and adjacent municipalities. For a town where many properties sit near the I-280 corridor and its adjacent open space, fire suppression water capacity is not an abstract concern.
