Email from District 3 We'll see you this Saturday at Voyager for Coffee with a Councilmember and on Tuesday for National Night Out! Dear neighbors, As we return from the July recess, I’ll be holding office hours at Voyager DTSJ on Saturday, August 1 at 11 am. (Sign up here to RSVP) I’ll be there to listen to your concerns and fill you in on what’s on the horizon at City Hall. Don’t forget to make your voice heard and help us rename one of our downtown landmarks! The survey to rename Plaza de Cesar Chavez is open through August 3. The finalists for the park’s new name reflect many of the suggestions I’ve heard from you since March. That’s a testament to the process we put together to make sure that this wasn’t a top-town decision, but a community effort to rename a longstanding, vibrant community space. These choices are all great future threads in the fabric of our downtown, and I look forward to seeing the community’s input reflected in the City’s ranked choice survey. National Night Out is coming up on Tuesday, August 4. Across San José, we’re coming together to build connections within the community and heighten crime prevention awareness by getting to know our neighbors better. Click here to find the National Night Out events in your neighborhood! (Don't see your neighborhood's D3 NNO event? Send details here and we'll add it to our map.) Yours in community, Five Wounds Urban Village Plan You're invited! On Saturday, August 2 from noon to 2 pm at the Roosevelt Community Center, hear an update on the Five Wounds Urban Village plan from the City of San José and help shape the vision including building height rules within the 28th St./Little Portugal BART Station Area. Registering for the meeting is encouraged but not required: bit.ly/FiveWoundsUVP Top 10 Items to Keep Out of Recycling Containers The City of San José has announced the top 10 most common items incorrectly placed in recycling carts as part of its efforts to help residents recycle right, protect the environment and help keep garbage and recycling rates low. Get more tips and resources to recycle right - visit SanJoseRecycles.org for a searchable database of more than 300 items! Keep Lithium Batteries and Household Hazardous Waste Away from Recycling and Garbage Recent incidents of fires in the back of garbage and recycling trucks serve as a good reminder for residents: Lithium batteries (found in common electronics such as cell phones, laptops, tablets, e-cigarettes, power banks and power tools) should never be placed in your garbage or recycling. Dispose of lithium batteries and other household hazardous waste at more than 500 neighborhood locations for FREE by making a drop-off appointment at HHW.org. On Wednesday, I joined San Jose Nikkei Resisters and the Neighbors Not Enemies Coalition of San Jose Japantown to pay respects to those killed by ICE and stand in opposition to the proposed ICE detention center near Gilroy. As your Councilmember, I’m proud to continue to stand with our immigrant neighbors, because #NeverAgainIsNow We celebrated five years of the Guildhouse this week! They have become such an anchor of the SoFA District, what I consider to be one of Downtown’s most exciting and up and coming neighborhoods. I've had the pleasure of enjoying many a night out here at Guildhouse, watching a Super Smash Bros tournament, attending a local political fundraiser, or just meeting up with friends over a good board game. As our Downtown continues to navigate the post-pandemic era, creating spaces that bring people together is more important than ever. Do you have an event you'd like to share with our D3 neighbors?
