Summary
Supervisor Jackie Fielder provides an update on the Cesar Chavez Street renaming process, highlighting the formation of a diverse community working group led by the Mayor's Office and key city officials. The group developed four naming criteria emphasizing women's leadership, labor and farmworker movements, Latino heritage, and honoring collective movements rather than individuals. Two proposed names, Si Se Puede and Las Campesinas, were presented for public feedback at a community meeting held at Flynn Elementary School. The working group will review input and recommend a name to the Mayor, with the Board of Supervisors conducting legislative action and public hearings to finalize the change by year-end.

Dear Community,

I am writing to share an update on the Cesar Chavez Street Renaming Process. The Mayor’s Office worked with co-chairs Assessor-Recorder Joaquin Torres and former Supervisor Susan Leal to form a community working group. Susan Leal helped lead the original effort to rename the street in the 1990s when she was then a Supervisor, which voters affirmed through Proposition O in November 1995.

Members of the working group include a representative from my office and the offices Supervisors Walton and Board President Mandelman (as the street spans Districts 9, 10 and 11), Treasurer Cisneros, and Mayor Lurie, along with community leaders representing women, survivors, small businesses, labor, the Latino community, immigrant communities, and artists. Members were chosen for their deep ties to San Francisco and its neighborhoods, history, and the communities this issue affects.

Over the course of several months, the working group deliberated over and developed four criteria that a new name should reflect, building on the original process in the 1990s while taking into account the lived realities of Latino and immigrant communities today: - Women’s leadership and the lived experiences of survivors - The labor and farmworker movement - Latino heritage and immigrant contributions - Honoring the movement over any individual After considering several options based on the above criteria, the group advanced two names for public input: 1. Si Se Puede 2. Las Campesinas Last night residents came together at the Cesar Chavez Street Renaming Community Meeting at Flynn Elementary School to share thoughts and perspectives on the street renaming process and these two names. We appreciate all who took the time to participate and contribute to this important community conversation.

The following articles were published by KQED and Mission Local about the meeting and provide more information about the context and comments about the options: - https://click.bos.sfgov.org/?qs=ABB7InYiOjEsImQiOjUwMTF9AAoAAAAABQhuvp7LtsrPzeHwvCTFgbKcyUUN9ZgyLI83Tq8Bx9Tza6abKOPxH4q7a7AWrNtaIpK_7oHOnvrIhtZml3FyrHRonJtBLM-8p90PsrpVaA Here Are San Francisco’s Top Picks to Rename Cesar Chavez Street - https://click.bos.sfgov.org/?qs=ABB7InYiOjEsImQiOjUwMTF9AAoAAAAABQhuvp7MmU6hyzfitZsRNtGv2AGHoMvw9FEXDDZHwe941fp6q1BD11tN9CHXaemER1N1c7ODJgTQFabDc1S5uRy3HvaI_7Y5rpffMBWALA San Francisco unveils two new names for Cesar Chavez Street If you were unable to attend that meeting or have more feedback to give, we invite you to provide feedback via our https://click.bos.sfgov.org/?qs=ABB7InYiOjEsImQiOjUwMTF9AAoAAAAABQhuvp7N9ZGjoRJcVZldEd7HPjYOCOWMuFWQZgkMhoYmeZWWPeb9VRgbR5PYrZyXiUKYra4zg7KMN81JbCKj660Qyc5zlihgfpuoAdakfw online form .

The working group will review public input and advance a recommended name to the Mayor. The change will then require legislative action by the Board of Supervisors, including public hearings and outreach by Public Works to affected residents and businesses. The City hopes to complete the process by the end of the year in order to respond to community feedback for urgency, while at the same time ensuring we get input and follow the legislative process required for such a change.
