Broadway Grade Separation — A Once-in-a-Generation Infrastructure Project

activeburlingame
The Broadway Avenue at-grade rail crossing is one of the most dangerous and congested in the entire state — and a massive grade separation project is now finally within reach. The at-grade crossing at Broadway has been identified as the second-most necessary grade separation among 10,000 at-grade crossings in California because it handles 70,000 vehicles per day — and a grade separation project is scheduled to open by end of 2028, which would also enable the restoration of weekday Caltrain service at Broadway station. The project will reshape the physical and economic geography of the Broadway corridor, and its design — how it interacts with the street grid, what it does to pedestrian and cyclist access, and how the resulting land around the station is treated — will have implications for decades. The November 2026 transit sales tax measure on the regional ballot would fund additional grade separation projects across the Peninsula.
