Traffic Safety — School Zones, Highway Intersections & Equestrian Crossings
active• woodside
Traffic safety is one of the most consistent quality-of-life concerns raised by Woodside residents — a town whose narrow, winding roads are shared by cars, horses, cyclists, and pedestrians in ways that create inherent friction. At its February 10, 2026 meeting, the Town Council discussed establishing speed limits near the intersection of Highway 84 and Highway 35, and in front of Woodside Elementary School — with the Council subsequently voting to ask Caltrans to lower the speed limit to 15 mph in front of Woodside Elementary over safety concerns raised by the town's Circulation Committee. The Hwy 84/35 intersection — known locally as the "Crossroads" — is one of the most dangerous in San Mateo County, with high-speed through traffic conflicting with local turning movements at a notoriously poor sightline crossing. The town's equestrian trail network adds a layer of complexity found nowhere else on the Peninsula: horse crossings at road intersections require specific signage, markings, and driver awareness that general traffic calming measures alone cannot fully address.
