Civic Center Master Plan — Reimagining the Heart of Gilroy
active• gilroy
Gilroy is pursuing a generational reinvestment in its civic core. The city has released a Draft Environmental Impact Report for a Civic Center Master Plan that proposes demolition of the existing City Hall, Wheeler Auditorium, City Hall Annex, senior center, and civic center parking lot — replacing them with a new multi-generational community center, civic park, and modernized city facilities on the same downtown footprint. The 45-day public review period for the DEIR is now open. City Council members have expressed strong support for building a civic center park and multi-generational community center that serves all ages — a centerpiece of efforts to make downtown Gilroy a true community destination, complementing the existing La Ofrenda Festival, Third Friday Art Walk, and Chalk Fest that have revitalized downtown cultural life. Funding sources for the project remain under development and will be a key question as the project moves forward.
